| South Africa : McCARTHY is back… |
The last time England side Blackburn’s striker Bennedict McCARTHY played for the national team was in Egypt in 2006 at the final stage of the African Nations Cup. He then blamed the South African Football Association (SAFA) for demonising him after a pay dispute. Since then he systematically refused to play for his country, as he did for the Nations Cup qualifier against Chad on 2 June.
After that fall-out with the SAFA that has lasted some 19 months the young star had a meeting with South African coach Carlos Alberto PARREIRA last weekend, after Bafana Bafana lost 1-0 to Scotland in a friendly match during which South Africa’s attack proved weak. Relationship between McCARTHY and SAFA seems now on the right track: he has just been included in the squad for the next crucial Nations Cup qualifier against Zambia in Cape Town on 9 September. The 19 goals he scored for Blackburn made him the second-top goalscorer in the Premier League last season.
