As any natural-born striker, the 17-year-old Nigerian striker Macauley CHRISANTUS seems to have all the qualities shared by most of the best known strikers: ability to be in the right place at the right time, a keen eye for the goal, and a cool finishing touch under pressure.
Having scored four goals during the African qualifiers in Togo in March the young player bagged five more goals during the group stage at Korea 2007.
He scored against Argentina in the semi-final last Saturday to become the best scorer of the tournament so far. However, the FC Abuja forward is not satisfied yet and has set his sights higher. “There is no limit for me”, he told FIFA.com I want to score as many goals as I can, maybe 8 to 9 goals.”An admirer of former Gunner Thierry HENRY, CHRISANTUS has scored all of his six goals with his right foot but he does not want to resemble his idol closely. “Well, my role model is myself,” he smiles. “I’d love to play for Arsenal, where young players with talent grow into real professionals, but for now I have to develop my own game.”
Nigeria qualified for the semi-final last Saturday after defeating Argentina 2-0. Captain Lukman HARUNA went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Fernando MEZA. He picked himself up and dispatched the spot-kick to hand the Golden Eaglets the lead. Then on the stroke of half-time a glorious exchange of passes on the left sent CHRISANTUS clear in front of goal, the striker making no mistake to double his side’s advantage and take his personal tally for the tournament to six.
