In september 2006 the Gambia Football Association (GFA) decided to appoint German Antoine HEY as coach for “The Scorpios”, the national football team, after a period of three years without coach. About two weeks ago HEY announced that his resignation, because his salary had not been paid since he was recruited. The secretary general for the GFA Jammeh BOJANG confirmed the issue, even though HEY had not officially informed the GFA. Yet Mr Ebou JOOF, the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Youth and Sports expressed a different position when he said that the issue was going to be clarified only after a meeting between the GFA and the Department which has the responsibility to pay the coach’s salary.
On November 22 Gambia’s Sports Minister Omar FAYE claimed that HEY is still Gambia’s coach, and added that the German will be returning to Gambia by the end of November to sign a formal contract. Mr FAYE who is in touch with HEY said that despite the money problem, which he hopes to solve rapidly, the coach will be back to Gambia where he is willing to work. But part of FAYE’s statement let uncertainties hang over future relations between HEY and his employers, since the Minister said: “The issue of money is there but we are trying to get the money and pay him his money – every body needs to be paid.” Probably an issue to be continued...
