Banned from international football competitions since October 2006 by FIFA, Kenya is in a mess. A six-man delegation of the KFF (Kenya Football Federation) backed by the government and led by Hussein SWALEH, former KFF secretary general will travel to Cairo this week to ask CAF (African Football Confederation) to convince FIFA to remove the sanction and reinstate Kenya.
The government appointed a football normalisation committee headed by Peter OCHIEL, who sent a letter to Sepp BLATTER to argue that the government interfered with the running of football only because feuding factions failed to resolve their disputes. Last week FIFA blamed again kenyan authorities for their continuous interference, despite recent efforts made by the KFF to improve its administration, and gave them until 28 February “to fully respect the FIFA statutes”, otherwise the country is going to face continued suspension. However the Kenyan government has asked FIFA to keep out of its domestic affairs and stop meddling with efforts to clean up the sport, which has been racked by infihgting and corruption. I such a situation Kenya will probably miss qualifiers matches for the African Cup of Nations 2008, and CAF is certainly not willing to support Kenya in its arm-wrestling with FIFA...
