| The Gambia: a new coach for the Scorpions |
Spaniard Jose MARTINEZ has just been appointed this week as the new coach of the national team of Gambia. He is a former player and former coach of spanish club of Real Zaragossa.
MARTINEZ replaces the 37-year-old Antoine HEY who was named in September 2006 but lasted just six months in the job because of disagreement over his salary. The new coach immediate duty will be to prepare the Scorpions for their next African Nations Cup qualifier match against Cap Vert in June. The Gambia is in the third position in the Group at the halfway stage of qualifying.
HEY refused to travel to Gambia last March for the qualifying match against Guinea because he was owned money. The Gambia sports minister Sheik Omar FAYE then said a search for his replacement would begin after the Group Eight match in Banjul (the capital city) on 24 March. Mr FAYE also explained that there was no formal contract between HEY and the Gambia but rather an arrangement that he take charge of the team ahead of important matches.
